Hellfire's picture

Comic or something up on the TF2 blog, in case you didn't see it. I wonder what it is about.

Hosting Changes

We are currently transferring the hosting of BoS to a new host. In the interim, some of the functionality may be missing (ie wiki has not been transferred yet).

User Pruning

Hellfire's picture

I pruned some old users that appear to be spam accounts. None of them had any posts and hadn't been accessed for quite a while.

Mathematically proven OS kernel

Hellfire's picture

This is really interesting. These researchers used mathematics to prove that the seL4 kernel works exactly as intended and nothing more. Here is their proof statement:

"The C code of the seL4 microkernel correctly implements the behaviour described in
its abstract specification and nothing more."

They made several assumptions, which they talk about.

Also, as a result of the proof they have proven that no buffer overflows, memory leaks, and several other common stability and security issues are impossible with this kernel.

TF2 Classless Update!

Hellfire's picture

Forgot to mention this yesterday. New update coming, but not for any particular class. So far announcements: 18 new hats (for us to not get probably...). A new arena map, offblast. King of the Hill mode, finally! New map for KotH: vladuct, looks pretty sweet with snow. Also, KotH modes for Nucleus and Sawmill.

Attacks on AES

Hellfire's picture

Lately there have been several white papers released on new AES attacks. The first brought 11 round AES 256 to 2^119th complexity, and the newest down to 2^70 (although AES256 specifies 14 rounds). They are classified as related-key attacks meaning that attackers must have copies of the plaintext encrypted with related, but separate keys. It's not to a level where there should be any panic - nothing is outright broken, but a cryptanalyst has gotten easier. Bruce Schneier recommends using AES128 instead of 256.

Forum Migration

Hellfire's picture
We are considering migrating the forums to something other than Drupal. I have uploaded a test forum HERE running punBB. Please go there and check it out, play around a bit, and report any errors that you might come across. Features of Note: File Attachment Private Messages Polls Better Searching I am aware that some of the links in the imported posts are not working properly. This is something I am working on.
